The 75th Anniversary of D-Day
June 06, 2019
On this day in 1944, after nearly a year of preparation, the order was given by Dwight D. Eisenhower for Operation Overlord to begin on the beaches of Normandy.
Codenamed, D-Day, the operation involving 155,000 brave Allied soldiers with 10,000 Allied casualties was instrumental in ending WWII. Allied troops consisting of American, British and Canadian soldiers worked together to overtake Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches.
German troops mistakenly believed a coordinated Allied misinformation campaign spread by double agents, "Mutt" and "Jeff" (did you ever wonder where that saying came from?) that discussed the fictitious British Fourth Army and even included actors transmitting fake radio transmission for the Germans to intercept. They went as so far as to run wedding announcements for fictitious soldiers in the local papers and used inflatable Sherman tanks and phony landing craft, and a British General's body double as decoys.
